Humane Education

Level I: HFA's Coloring Book (For ages 3 to 6)
When a child thinks of a farm, various images come to mind: pigs happily rolling in the mud, chickens busily scratching in the dirt, or cows peacefully grazing in a field. The Humane Farming Association's Coloring and Activity Book has been developed to support this wholesome vision of animals on farms, living healthy lives in humane environments.

Some materials dealing with farm animals distance children from the fact that cows, pigs, and chickens are living, feeling, sentient beings. HFA's Coloring and Activity Book has been designed to show children that farm animals - like all animals - have basic needs.

The illustrations and text in HFA's Coloring and Activity Book has been tailored to gently reinforce a child's compassion for animals and to remind him or her that farm animals need fresh air to breathe, ample room in which to walk and run, and a healthful environment where they can express their natural behaviors. Each page has been sensitively crafted to be thought provoking and educational.

HFA's Coloring and Activity Book has received glowing reviews from parents, educators, and others who have long expressed an interest in educational materials relating to farm animal protection. Even more meaningful, perhaps, have been the hundreds of drawings and letters we have received from children wishing to participate in HFA's Farm Animal Friend Club.

We invite you to participate in our efforts to end the mistreatment of farm animals. Planning a farm animal unit or farm animal day can be a wonderful learning experience for you, your class, or your family.

Level II: HFA's Story and Activity Book (For ages 5 - 14)
Where do farm animals live, and how are they treated?

For too long, educators have had to rely on materials supplied by agribusiness for answers to these and other questions about farm animals. Children have thus been led to believe that it is acceptable for farm animals to be deprived of humane and healthful environments. That's not good for the children or for the animals.

In what context will children be introduced to the practices of factory farming? Will the issues be presented in a way which distances them from the fact that farm animals are living, feeling beings? Or will children be given access to materials that nurture and reinforce their own sense of empathy and compassion?

HFA's Level II Farm Animal Story and Activity Book is a diverse and challenging addition to HFA's Educational Program. This book provides a valuable learning experience for students as well as an effective instructional tool for teachers and parents. The book features farm animal facts, creative games and activities and the compelling adventure of a boy named Scoop. The Farm Animal Story and Activity Book has been designed to cover the wide range of awareness and sensibilities of school children of various ages.

Young readers are invited to embark on a journey. Through the eyes of Scoop, they will learn that not all farms are the idyllic places they may have imagined. As co-travelers through the book, they will discover that they can have a part in alleviating the cruelty that many animals are forced to endure - and that they can make a difference in our world.

HFA's Level II book, through the use of games, stories, and explanations of the many problems associated with factory farming, reinforces the notion that farm animals need protection from the dangers of factory farming. Children are encouraged to "step inside" the book to embark on an educational journey which lasts from the first page to the last.

We invite you to share this book with a young family member or friend, or perhaps you may want to donate it to your local school or library. Providing children with a positive message about the compassionate, humane, and healthful care of animals is one of the most thoughtful gifts we can give.
